For these women &#8211; who are single, widowed, divorced, separated or deserted &#8211; equal rights and equal opportunity are no mere slogans.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Dale Bumpers<\/p>\n\t<p>As it did nationwide, the proposal ratification of the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) in Arkansas caused controversy for the governor&#8217;s office. Bumpers received numerous letters both in vehement support and opposition of the amendment. Proponents asserted that the ratification of the ERA would create equality for all Arkansans; opponents called for an across-the-board veto, because &#8220;nothing [should] be done to further disrupt the traditional values of the American home and family,&#8221; as stated in one letter.<\/p>\n<p>The ERA was an administration bill, mirroring national efforts at the time. The bill, sponsored by the Governor&#8217;s office during the legislative session of 1973, was supported by such reputable organizations as the American Home Economics Association, the National Education Association and the General Federation of Women&#8217;s Clubs. The requirement of equal pay for equal work had been a law in Arkansas since 1955 and in gaining the jobs in which they were qualified. Governor Bumpers supported the ratification of the Equal Rights Amendment.<\/p>\n<p>Researchers interested in women&#8217;s history in the 1970s should start with <a href=\"https:\/\/arstudies.contentdm.oclc.org\/digital\/collection\/findingaids\/id\/1149\/rec\/1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">series 1, subseries 1, box 43<\/a>.
