In addition, he was known for his roles as choir conductor and music teacher, among other talents. He played his first piano recital at age twelve. By age fourteen, he hosted a half-hour classical music radio program on KLRA-AM. Porter enhanced his musical talents by formally studying music. In May 1954, he earned a bachelor\u2019s degree in music from Arkansas Agricultural, Mechanical, and Normal College (now the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff), and in 1975 he earned a master\u2019s degree in music from Henderson State University in Arkadelphia.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1030\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1030\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/ualrexhibits.org\/characters\/files\/2014\/11\/Porter-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1030\" src=\"https:\/\/ualrexhibits.org\/characters\/files\/2014\/11\/Porter-1-300x240.jpg\" alt=\"Porter's Dunbar High School class photograph, 1950\" width=\"300\" height=\"240\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ualrexhibits.org\/characters\/files\/2014\/11\/Porter-1-300x240.jpg 300w, https:\/\/ualrexhibits.org\/characters\/files\/2014\/11\/Porter-1.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1030\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Porter&#8217;s Dunbar High School class photograph, 1950<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>On July 22, 1993, Porter died of lung cancer.  He was greatly eulogized at the time of his death, especially by his church, Bethel AME, as he was the organist for thirty-five years.  Today, Porter&#8217;s legacy continues through his archival collection, The Porter Family Papers, which explores the man&#8217;s life as musician, family man, and community supporter.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<div class=\"entry-summary\"><div class=\"entry-summary\">\n<p>Arthur Lee &#8220;Art&#8221; Porter was a gifted pianist of both classical and jazz music. He taught music at numerous schools in Little Rock and was best known as a member of the The Art Porter Trio.
