Center for Arkansas History and Culture

Located in downtown Little Rock, the UA Little Rock Center for Arkansas History and Culture is housed in the Bobby L. Roberts Library, the state’s largest facility dedicated to the study of Arkansas history and culture. Through its connection to the university, the archives benefit from the rigorous scholarship of our faculty, creating a valuable resource for students, researchers, stakeholders, and the general public.

The Bobby L. Roberts Library represents a partnership between the Central Arkansas Library System and the University of Arkansas at Little Rock, through which the two institutions have made more than 10 million documents and photographs on Arkansas history available for public use.

Mission

The UA Little Rock Center for Arkansas History and Culture collects, preserves, and enables access to Arkansas records of enduring value; prepares students and the reign for the 21st century through academic leadership and education on archival practices and technologies; and engages the community through outreach, programming, and exhibitions.

The Civil War 150 Commemoration

In 2007, the 86th Arkansas General Assembly created the Arkansas Civil Sesquicentennial Commission. Under the legislation, the purpose of this commission is to sanction events, encourage research and education programs related to Civil War Arkansas, and preserve the sites that witnessed the Civil War in Arkansas. The five-year commemoration The Civil War Sesquicentennial will be celebrated between 2011 and 2015.

In the UA Little Rock Archives, the Civil War collection is the largest holding of historical documents. This digital exhibit will highlight some of the unique and valuable documents, manuscripts, and photographs the archives have to offer.

If you are interested in the Civil War in Arkansas, you will want to visit us, as well as our partner institution, the Butler Center for Arkansas Studies, which also has remarkable collections of Civil War materials.
