At this recital, Alice&#8217;s instructor will award his best student with a ticket to hear the famous pianist Reba Loring at a performance in Memphis. Alice&#8217;s brother, Hal, teases Alice about her constant piano practicing, and Alice teases Hal about his delight in saving money from his paper route. The evening of the recital, Alice nervously walks to the piano to play her piece. To her dismay, her fingers fail her, dashing her hopes that she will win first place in the student competition. After her family consoles her, Hal dips into his paper-route earnings and surprises Alice with tickets to the Reba Loring performance in Memphis. Hal further surprises Alice by requesting that Loring play <em>Serenade for the Doll<\/em> as an encore, which she does.
