Norton, Company C, 115th Ohio\n\t<\/h5>\n\tMidnight&#8217;s dreary hour has past,<br \/>\nThe mists of night are falling fast,<br \/>\nSultana sounds her farewell blast,<br \/>\nAnd braves the might stream;<br \/>\nThe swollen river&#8217;s banks overflow,<br \/>\nThe deaden clouds are hanging low<br \/>\nAnd veil the stars bright silver glow,<br \/>\nAnd darkness reigns supreme.\nHer engine fires now brighter burn,<br \/>\nHer mammoth wheels now faster turn,<br \/>\nHer dipping paddles lightly spurn<br \/>\nThe river&#8217;s foaming crest:<br \/>\nAnd drowsy Memphis, lost to sight,<br \/>\nNow fainter shows her beacon light,<br \/>\nAs Sultana steams in the dead of night,<br \/>\nAnd the Union soldiers rest.\nThe sleeping soldiers dream of home,<br \/>\nTo them the long-sought day had come,<br \/>\nNo more in prison pens to moan,<br \/>\nOr guarded by the gray;<br \/>\nAt last the changing fates of war<br \/>\nHad swing their prison &#8220;gates ajar,&#8221;<br \/>\nAnd &#8220;laurel wreaths&#8221; from the North afar<br \/>\nAwait their crowning day.\nFor Peace has raised her magic hand,<br \/>\nThe Stars and Stripes wave o&#8217;er the land,<br \/>\nThe conquered foeman now disband,<br \/>\n&#8220;As melts the mowing dew;&#8221;<br \/>\nAnd mothers wear their wonted smile,<br \/>\nAnd aged sires the hours beguile,<br \/>\nAnd plighted love awaits the while<br \/>\nThe coming of the blue.\nOn sails the steamer through the gloom,<br \/>\nOn sleep the soldiers to their doom,<br \/>\nAnd death&#8217;s dark angel oh! so soon-<br \/>\nCalls loud the muster roll.<br \/>\nA-burst-a-crash-and-timbers fly,\nAnd-flame-and-steam-leap to the sky,<br \/>\nAnd-men awakened-but-to die-<br \/>\nCommend to God their souls.\nOut from the flame&#8217;s encircling fold,<br \/>\nLike a mighty rush of warriors, bold,<br \/>\nThey leap to the river dark and cold,<br \/>\nAnd search for the hidden shore.<br \/>\nIn the cabins, -and-pinioned-there,<br \/>\nA mid-the-smoke-and-fire-and-glare,<br \/>\nThe-awful-wail-of-death&#8217;s-despair<br \/>\nIs heard above the roar.\nOut on, the river&#8217;s rolling tide,<br \/>\nOut from the steamer&#8217;s burning side,<br \/>\nOut where the circle is growing wide,<br \/>\nThey battle with the waves.<br \/>\nAnd drowning men each other clasp,<br \/>\nAnd writhing in death&#8217;s closing grasp<br \/>\nThey struggle bravely, but at last<br \/>\nSink to watery graves.\nOh! for the star&#8217;s bright silver light<br \/>\nOh! for a moon to dispel the night!<br \/>\nOh! for the hand that should guide aright<br \/>\nThe way to the distant land!<br \/>\nClinging to driftwood and floating down,<br \/>\nCaught in the eddies and whirling around,<br \/>\nWashed to the flooded banks are found<br \/>\nThe survivors of that band.\n<p>Norton, William H.\u00a0 &#8220;The Burning of the Sultana.&#8221; <em>Loss of the Sultana and Reminiscences of Survivors<\/em>.
