A young girl named Janet is having a difficult time writing a letter to her friend Betty, who lives in the exciting city of Venice, Italy. Janet lives in a small country town in the United States, where her father is a doctor. Betty's letters to Janet are always full of excitement and adventure. In Betty's last letter, she tells Janet about riding and singing in a gondola, and watching a woman make beautiful lace. From Janet's point of view, there is not much to write about in response to Betty's letter. On a dreary, rainy Saturday morning, Janet’s father has to make a house call because a little boy has injured himself. He invites Janet to accompany him. While Janet's father is tending to the boy, Janet finds herself in the kitchen with the boy's grandmother. The boy's father comes in and requests that the grandmother sing a song to divert his son's mind from the pain while the doctor tends to the injuries. Janet finds herself joining in the song even though she does not know the words. Finally, the doctor finishes with the boy, and he and Janet return home. Janet has the insight that interesting things can happen wherever she finds herself.
